Zakinthos

One of the most southerly of the ONIAN ISLANOS off the coast of the Peloponnese. It is a tourist resort of gardens and flowers with a rugged coast. Zakinthos was occupied by the Venetians from AD 1487 to 1797, and a Venetian castle stands on the site of the ancient Acropolis (citadel). The island's main business now is tourism, but it also produces melons, currants, white wine and olives. A medieval drama festival is held each August.
