APPLIED RESEARCH AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES

The Aquarium is an exceptional research and observation tool. It enables new ways to be explored of improving the techniques of maintaining the species shown to the visitors and studies on the behaviour of different species.

Breeding is closely monitored. Thirty or so species, both fishes and invertebrates, breed inside the tanks. Some stock farming is quite successful:

- Clownfish lay their eggs twice a month: they fix them onto special supports transferred into hatching tanks after seven days' incubation;

- the main difficulty of breeding cuttlefish lies in feeding the young;

- a real coral farm has been operating since 1989.

Animal and plant plankton breeding provides food for young fish during the early stages of their lives, but also feeds numerous filter-feeding animals.

THE AQUARIUM UNDER MONITORING

To control the biological activity of aquaria, and prevent accidents, a computerized management system monitors the physical and chemical parameters of the tanks and all the technical installations on a permanent basis. This system is made up of sounding devices submerged inside the aquaria (for temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH) and of multiple captors. The information is transmitted through a cabled network to a central computer which analyzes the data. In case of abnormality or exceeding the maximum or minimum thresholds, alarms go off automatically to alert the staff concerned, enabling them to act as quickly as possible.
