Different species show their varied shapes and striking colours, resulting from their adaptations to the requirements of the environment, and to different modes of life.
Inside the tanks, they move about in harmony with their surroundings similar to their original environment. In ideal conditions, many fishes and invertebrates breed. They do not encounter natural predators: therefore they often live longer. Some fishes reach a very old age and astounding sizes.
The largest move about in a tank nicknamed "happy retirement", housing tropical as well as Mediterranean species. A bluering angelfish lived over 27 years in the Aquarium: it was for a long time the doyen of the tropical area.
