Traditionally, Norwegians have looked to the sea for their livelihood. Today, 80 per cent of them Jive within sight of a coastline which even disregarding Norway's 50 000 islands, measures some 21 000 km (13 000 miles). So the fishing industry has always been important, and partly to protect fish stocks Norway has steadily extended her territorial waters, which now reach to 200 nautical miles. Lofoten cod fishing in late winter and herring catches off western Norway in the spring have both suffered a decline, which is blamed on overfishing. The income of the fishing industry has also been hit by bans on whaling in the North Atlantic and Antarctic.
The seagoing tradition is, however, maintained by Norway's 200 shipping companies and the fifth largest merchant fleet in the world. The ships mainly carry cargo, but some companies have sought to diversify by investing in a fleet of cruise liners, which operate principally in Caribbean waters.
The earliest known people of Norway were hunters and gatherers who left rock carvings 5000 years ago. However, the state of Norway is young. From the 14th century the land was part of the Danish realm, and from 1814 until independence in 1905 it was united with Sweden. German forces occupied Norway from April 1940 to the end of the Second World War.
