Tromso

Chief town of north Norway, on a small island some 340 km (210 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. It is the country's biggest fishing centre, especially for herring, and is the supply port for Arctic expeditions and trading. Tromso has a cathedral and the world's most northerly university, founded in 1968. Its museum has a Lapp research centre and there is an institute for the study of the aurora borealis (northern lights). In 1944 the German battleship Tirpitz was sunk by British planes off Tromso.

Stavanger

City in the extreme southwest of the country on the Stavanger Fjord. It is one of Norway's largest ports, now focusing on the construction of drilling rigs and tankers for liquefied petroleum gas. Because it is near Norway's North Sea oil and natural gas, it has become the headquarters of the Norwegian Oil Board, and of many supply and charter firms. Founded in 1125, when building started on its cathedral, Stavanger also has a theatre and several museums.
