Southern province to the east of the capital, Lisbon, and immediately north of the Algarve, occupying nearly one-third of the country (24 683 km2, 9142 sq miles). The main rivers are the Tagus, Sado and Guadiana. It was the scene of numerous battles in the middle Ages, first against the Moors, then against Spanish invaders. Its mostly low, rolling landscape is dotted with cork oaks and wheat fields. To the east, the hills of the Serra de Sao Mamede rise to 1025 m (3362 ft). Following Portugal's political revolution in 1974, the province s large estates were turned into cooperatives, but many have now returned to private ownership.
