Oporto (Porto)
The country's second largest city after Lisbon, lying about 270 km (170 miles) north of the capital on the steep banks of the Douro river. There are three bridges over the Douro: the metal Maria Pia railway bridge completed in 1877 and designed by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris; the Dom Luis I bridge built in 1886, with two layers of roads; and the Arrabida road bridge, completed in 1963.
Before the mouth of the river silted up, the city was a busy port and it still exports wine, including port wine, which takes its name from the city.
Oporto is at the heart of an industrial region producing tyres, chemicals, metals, electrical equipment, car parts, textiles, leather goods, silk, shoes and soap.
Among the city's many places of interest are the 12th-century cathedral; the Clerigos tower -a Baroque church with a granite tower 75 m (246 ft) high; the Gothic and Baroque Church of St. Francis; the Soares dos Reis Museum containing pottery, paintings and sculptures; the Ethnographic Museum; and the Palacio da Bolsa - now the stock exchange.
