Day 7:

Plasencia - La Vera

Plasencia's Cathedral Visit the beautiful Plasencia with its Cathedral which is actually 2 Cathedrals: the Romanesque Cathedral Vieja and the Catedral Nueva, a mainly Gothic building with a handsome Plateresque façade.

Casa de las Dos Torres Then, among several monuments, see the Casa de las Dos Torres, the Iglesia de San Nicolas and the Iglesia de San Martin, all dating from the 13th or 14th century.

After that, go to visit the La Vera region. Discover half-timbered houses at odd angles, typical of La Vera. Have a look to Cuacos de Yuste which is surrounded by these typical La Vera half-timbered houses.

Monasterio de Yuste Then, visit the Monasterio de Yuste with its Gothic and Plateresque cloisters and the modest royal chambers, with the ailing monarch's bed placed to give him a direct view of the altar.

Garganta la Olla Next, discover the picturesque village of Garganta la Olla from where you can make the spectacular drive over the 1269m Puerto de Piornal pass to the Valle del Jerte.

Finish your La Vera's discovery by seeing 2 La Vera villages with fine traditional architecture: Valverde de la Vera and Villanueva de la Vera. The former is particularly engaging, with its pretty Plaza de España lined with timber balconies and town water gushing down ruts etched into the middle of the cobbled lanes.
