The suburbs cling to steep hills overlooking the centre. It owes its fame to the Romans, who exploited its hot mineral springs and called it Aquae Sulis, and to 18th-century developers who made it a fashionable watering place by building a stone city of squares and crescents as fine as anything in Britain.

Despite fierce opposition from conservationists, some of this Georgian city has been demolished to make way for new houses and offices because its narrow valley restricts expansion. But much remains: the Roman baths have been excavated; the Pump Room, renovated in 1796, stands across a square from the 15th to 16th-century abbey; and there is a costume museum in the Assembly Rooms (built 1769-71). There is a modern university outside the city.
