However, the River Avon, on which it stands, is too narrow to handle large ocean-going ships, and Avonmouth - downriver on the Bristol Channel - has become its main outlet.
2. Main article
Although Bristol was severely damaged in the 2nd World War, it is particularly rich in old churches. Its cathedral dates back to the 12th century and the Church of St. Mary Redcliffe was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The suburb of Clifton has a suspension bridge 80 m (260 ft) high over the river gorge; it was started by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59) and completed after his death.

The gorge's 18th and 19th-century houses give it, from the river, a Mediterranean look. The University of Bristol was founded in 1909. The suburb of Filton has an aircraft factory.
