It was the birthplace of the established Church in England, with its first archbishop appointed in AD 601, and is today the seat of the Primate of All England and the world headquarters of Anglicanism. Pilgrims journeyed there for centuries to the shrine of Archbishop Thomas Becket (1118-70), who was murdered in his own cathedral.

The city has retained much of its medieval character, including narrow streets, houses and a large section of the city wall. The cathedral was begun in about 1070, and completed only in 1400. It stands in a wide close, surrounded by old monastic buildings and the King's School. In the countryside outside the city is the modern University of Kent.

Folkestone
20 miles away from Canterbury, Folkestone is a great place with great views (sea side). It has skate parks. Children and teenagers love going there. It's really easy to make friends and you have great fun. There are lots of shops around so you'll never starve. Folkestone has got a town centre which is quite big, has a lot of shops and some new ones (Primark). You should come. It's a really great place and the people there are friendly and kind. You will never be left on your own :)
