It has been described as the best-preserved walled city in Britain, and receives many tourists. It was founded by the Romans as Deva in the 1st century AD. The present walls were built mainly on the foundations of the Roman fortifications and were started in the 10th century.

The city has one of the country's finest Roman amphitheaters, a castle, a red sandstone cathedral dating back to the 12th century, many fine timbered houses and unusual two-storey medieval shopping galleries called The Rows. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the city was a key regional port, but it declined because of silting in the River Dee.
