The city, 55 km (35 miles) north-east of Birmingham, has been renowned since the 18th century for its silk and Crown Derby porcelain, and is also the headquarters of Rolls-Royce cars and aircraft engines. The Church of All Saints was raised to cathedral status in 1927.

The county includes the coalfields around Chesterfield and the hills of the southern Pen-nines - a major tourist area. They include the PEAK DISTRICT National Park, rising to 636 m (2086 ft) at Kinder Scout, and the spa towns of Buxton and Matlock Bath. The county stretches north to the outskirts of Manchester and Sheffield, and covers 2631 km2 (1016 sq miles).
