It is dominated by its massive Norman cathedral, burial place of the English historian and monk the Venerable Bede (673-735), which towers over the castle and the narrow streets of the medieval town. The castle is now part of the city's university.

The county covers an area of 2436 km2 (941 sq miles). Its economy in the 18th and 19th centuries was dominated by coal, but mining has declined and the steel industry at the town of Consett has been closed down. Parts of the county were cut off in 1974 to form the new counties of CLEVELAND and TYNE AND WEAR.
