It used to stand on an island - the Isle of Ely - in the heart of The Fens, and could be reached only by boat or by three narrow causeways.

For this reason it was used as a refuge for five years by the English warrior Hereward the Wake after the Norman invasion of 1066. The island disappeared when The Fens were drained. The cathedral, built of stone delivered by boat, is one of Britain's most beautiful.

It was built in several distinct styles between the 11th and 14th centuries, and has a unique octagonal tower. The King's School next to the cathedral was founded in AD 970.
