The district has rich literary associations, notably with the 19th-century Lakeland Poets, of whom William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is the best known. For over a century the Lake District has been one of Britain's major tourist areas, despite being one of the wettest. It has been made a national park, but remains threatened by the hordes of visitors and by exploitation of its water resources.
