Lancashire
County of north-west England, formerly including Furness (now part of CUMBRIA) and the areas around LIVERPOOL and MANCHESTER but now covering 3043 km2 (1175 sq miles) to the north of these cities.
It was a cradle of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, and became the world's major cotton centre before the First World War in mill towns such as PRESTON (now the county town), ROCHDALE (now in Greater Manchester), BLACKBURN and Burnley.

Most of the great mills are now closed or converted to other businesses. The Lancashire coalfield has declined, and towns such as WIGAN (also now in Greater Manchester), which once supplied fuel to the cotton mills, have been hit by unemployment. The county's seaside resorts, such as BLACKPOOL, and the PENNINE hills are tourist attractions.
