The city has a fine 11th-century castle and stands on a ridge above the River Witham, 190 km (120 miles) north of London. Its cathedral, one of the largest in Britain, has been rebuilt several times since the 11th century because of fire and earthquake damage, and it lost its main spire in a storm in the 16th century.
