It flourished in the late 17th and 18th centuries on trade with the New World and Africa, first in slaves and sugar, then in cotton. In the 19th century, it became the main port for emigrants to the United States not only from Britain but also from Scandinavia and Germany.

Its docks and quays stretched along the Mersey for 12 km (7 miles) while, on the south shore, the town of Birkenhead grew to provide further docks and, after 1824, shipbuilding yards. Liverpool and Birkenhead were linked by a 4.8 km (3 mile) long road tunnel in 1934 and by a second opened in 1971.

Liverpool has declined seriously since the Second World War. There are two large cathedrals - the Roman Catholic one a masterpiece of modern design - many fine civic buildings and a university, but the transatlantic passenger traffic now goes by air, cotton is no longer king, unemployment is high, and the docks are all but empty and have been partly reclaimed for a park. For many, the city's greatest claim to fame is the Beatles pop group -John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, who were all born there and established their careers at its Cavern Club.
