It was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in AD 71, and Constantine the Great was proclaimed emperor by his men in the city in 306. The Angles made it their capital and it became an archbishopric in 634. The Vikings burnt it and then made it their capital of Jorvik from 867.

But the city's chief claim to fame is its magnificent cathedral, or Minster, completed in 1470 and the largest medieval church in northern Europe. Its beautiful 15th-century stained-glass east window is one of the biggest in the world and another, dating from about 1150, is probably the oldest in Britain; its lantern tower is the tallest in England at 60 m (198 ft). The roof was badly damaged by fire in 1984, and needed extensive repairs.
