Some Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rock

(i) Slate - It is composed of fine-grained particles which splits into thin or thick sheets. It has a blue-black color but red, green and black slates are also found.

(ii) Phyllite - This is in a more metamorphosed form than state. It has lustre due mica particles. The rocks less metamorphosed than phyllite are called slates and those more metamorphosed are called schists.

(iii) Schist - It is more metamorphosed than Phyllite and has a higher content of mica and quartz. It is of two types-Chlorite Schist and Hornblende schist.

(iv) Gneiss - It consists of coarse particles and develops incomplete cleavages and many layers. It has an excess of Feldspar, Quartz, mica, etc. Granite Gneiss is a well-known rock.

(v) Marble - It is metamorphosed from limestone and dolomite. It is a beautiful stone and is used in makings. The world famous Taj Mahal of India is a good example of building made of marble.

(vi) Quartzite - Quartzite is formed when the limestone particles are cemented by Quartz. Quartz gets deposited on the particles of sand in the form of a solution. It has the lustre of glass. Pure quartzite has 97% silica dioxide but this percentage is different in different quartzites.

Examples of metamorphic rocks metamorphosed from basic rocks:

From igneous rocks:

  • Mica rocks → Schist

  • Granite → Gneiss

  • Bituminous coal → Anthracite coal and Graphite

    From sedimentary rocks:

  • Limestone → Marble

  • Sandstone → Quartzite

  • Shale → Slate

  • Peat → Coal
