Earth composition

The elements in the Earth's crust are not found in their elemental forms. These elements combine with others to make various substances which have a definite chemical composition, chemical and physical properties. These substances are called minerals. Usually, minerals are composed of two or more than two elements but some minerals do have only one element. For example, sulphur, graphite, gold, etc., are called one-element minerals. The substance formed of one or more minerals and a part of the Earth's crust is called rock.

It is usual to call the hard and rigid part of the Earth's crust as rock. Geographically, this definition of rock is incomplete. Rock may be hard, soft, of large size or fine as a small grain and coloured or uncolored. For example, granite is hard; graphite is soft. Basalt has a large size; while sand is fine.

The rocks have been formed of about 2000 minerals but most of the nodes are composed of six minerals - (i) Feldspar (ii) Quartz (iii) Pyroxenes (iv) Amphiboles (v) Mica (vi) Olivine.
