(B) Sedimentary Rocks According to Formation. The sedimentary rocks are formed by the action of water, glacier, wind, etc. The rocks are, therefore, divided according to the agent of erosion that have played the major role in the formation of rocks:
(1) Aqueous Rocks - Water transports rock particles from one place to another. The layers of these particles form sedimentary rocks. The aqueous rocks are classified according to water reservoirs.
(2) Lacustrine Rocks - Rivers and winds bring rock particles to the lakes. The particles accumulate in its floor. Finer rock material is found in lakes situated in plains than in mountains. The nature of sediment deposited depends upon the stage of river valley development and the cause of lake formation. When the lake is filled up with sediment or its water is dried, the sediment can be seen deposited in the lakes in the form of stratified rocks.
(3) Riverine Rocks - When the rivers enter plains, its speed of flow is reduced and the sediment which it brings with it is deposited in the flood plains and deltas. The sediment, which is coarse than clay is called silt. The sediment which is a mixture of clay and silt is called Alluvium.
(4) Chemically Formed Rocks - The rock mixture which is dissolved in water gets deposited when its water evaporates. Gypsum has been formed in this way.
(5) Glacial Rocks - Glaciers scour the floor and adjoining areas and transport rock-mixture with them. The glaciers usually leave this material on its floors, on both the sides and at their terminals. The rock material, thus lift, forms glacial rocks.
(6) Aeoline (aeolian) Rocks (also called ventifacts) - Wind also transports rock-mixture from one place to another. The fine particles flown by winds from Central Asia are carried to great distances and are deposited into rocks. Such rocks are formed only in those areas where the climate is dry.
