Small and big particles of rocks go to the formation of sedimentary rocks. These particles are obtained from different substances. The sedimentary rocks are, divided into the following types:-
(1) Calcareous Rocks - Animals and plants accumulate lime in the seas. The Coral's body is composed of lime and corals are found in various strata of limestone. The eastern coast of Australia has abundant areas where calcareous (Limy) rocks are found, such as Great barrier reef. Limestone, Dolomite, etc., are good examples of calcareous rocks.
(2) Sand Stone - The rocks which are composed of sand are called sand-stones. They have a preponderance of sand.
(3) Clayey Rock - The larger particles which are deposited in the seas disintegrate into smaller particles. The sediment formed of fine rock particles is non-porous and is called clay. This type of rock, i.e., clay, is eroded easily.
(4) Carbonaceous Rock - Dense forests near seas have often been submerged into sea water in ancient times. Sedimentary layers were deposited on them. Under the weight, the layers of sediments undergo transformation. The forests are, converted into coal. The main component of coal is carbon. These rocks are, therefore, known as Carbonaceous rocks.
(5) Conglomerate Rocks - Gravel (Pebbles, Cobbles, etc.) are acted upon by rivers, glaciers, etc., and are rounded in the process. Conglomerate rocks are formed when fine, small and big pieces of stones are cemented together. They are mainly quartz: Sand fills the spaces between the pebbles of the rock. The cementing material is usually silica, clay, oxides of Iron and Calcium.
(6) Breccia-This rock resembles conglomerates but are not rounded and remain angular. It is, therefore, clear that the material of Breccia has not been transported by water because water smooths the angular part of the rock. Possibly the Breccia is a part of talus accumulation or some angular rock debris.
