Sedimentary rock

In the 16 km. thick crust of the earth, 95% rocks are igneous and 5% sedimentary. However, 80% of the surface rocks are sedimentary and the rest are igneous.

Weathering and erosion take place on the earth's surface. This loosens the particles of the rocks and are then transported from one place to another. The particles of igneous and metamorphic rocks when transported are usually deposited in parallel layers, one upon another. The weight of upper layers on the lower layers hardens the latter. These layers hardened, stratified and consolidated are known as Sedimentary rocks. The classification of sediment. The sediment, which forms sedimentary rocks, is divided into the following groups:-

(i) Land derived

(ii) Organic

(iii) Volcanic

(iv) Magmatic

(v) Meteoritic.
