Indonesia became an important oil producer in the nineties and has remained so since. In 1988, she produced 22 million metric tones of oil. The capital interests are chiefly Dutch. Oil field is situated in Sumatra, Java and Borneo and Balikpapan are important oil towns.
Burma and Sarawak produce about Ii million metric tons and 60 thousand metric tons respectively.
China and Japan produced 113 million metric tons and 0.5 million metric tons respectively in 1988.
India: India's production of petroleum dates back to 1894. Petroleum industry in India has made headway only after independence. Starting from a modest level of indigenous crude production of around 250,000 tonnes and consumption level of 340,000 tonnes in the years 1950-5, crude oil production during 1987-88 was 26.5 million tons and the consumption level around 30 million tonnes.
About 15 million tonnes of Crude oil and 3.9 million tones of petroleum products were imported to meet the country's requirements in 1982-83.
Burma: The fields are in the Irrawaddy valley, supplying about 9/10th of the indigenous production. The trend in crude petroleum production during the last few years is shown below:
Oil Production In Burma
Year thousand metric tons
1980 630
1985 605
1988 603
China: In 1988 China raised 113 million metric tons of crude oil China has gradually been coming to limelight in the production of crude oil Production has raised from 1 million metric tons in 1955 to 112 million metric tons in 1988. The discovery of the Taching oil field in the northeast region of Northern Manchuria has given a boost to oil production. Besides, the oil fields of Yumen, Karamai, Tasdam Basin, new discoveries had been made at Shengli, Takang, Tarim basin, Szechwan and in Sinkiang.
Japan: The petroleum belt lies along the sea cost from Hokkaido to Honshu. The western part of Honshu includes the two principal oil fields, the Akita and Nilgata. These two fields supply 95% of her oil. In 1985 Japan raised 0.5 million metric tons of crude oil.
World Trade in Crude Oil: Petroleum is mostly traded in the crude form and refined near the market centres. A large quantity of crude oil drilled in the Latin American countries is exported to the port refineries of the U.S.A. The Middle East exercises a virtual monopoly in the matter of crude oil supply to the consuming countries of the world. Great Britain, West Germany, France, Japan, China, Australia, India, U.S.-the main importing countries have to depend on the Middle East for oil. The oil exporting countries (OPEC) have step by step, raised the price of oil. As a result the importing countries have to face hardship due to the high price of oil.
