The cool temperate belt of U.S.A. has many important favorable factors for the growth and development of industries, and the result is that this belt is the largest industrial belt of the world. Iron ore and coking coal, which are the basic needs of the industry are easily available here. Transportation facilities are also excellent. The heaviest population of North America is concentrated within this industrial belt having skilled and unskilled labour both. Consuming markets are also located here. In every respect it is the most prosperous industrial belt of the world. There are nine major industrial districts and each of them has its own specialty.
The industrial districts are:
(1) The St. Louis District
(2) The Chicago-Milwaukee district
(3) Ohio Indiana Inland District
(4) The Pittsburgh -Cleveland District
(5) The New York Metropolitan district
(6) The southern Pennsylvania district
(7) The Mohawk Valley and Ontario Plain
(8) The South-Western New England District
(9) The Eastern New England District.
St. Louis district is famous for meat packing, Petroleum refining and steel production etc. The Chicago Milwaukee district is really outstanding in producing iron and steel. Oil refineries are also present in large number. Ohio Indiana Inland District is the machine tool centre of the world. The Pittsburgh Cleveland district is at top in heavy iron and steel industry. The New York Metropolitan district concentrates on clothing, printing and petroleum refining. Southern Pennsylvania district is popular for its tide water steel plants. Other industrial centres have many diversified industries like machine tools, fire arm, clocks, electrical goods, high grade papers, cotton textiles, woolen goods etc.
Detroit known as the automobile capital of the world, has crossed 4 million population. Montreal, a leading city of Canada has more than 1.5 million population. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. Edmonton, known as oil city is the capital of Alberta. Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a leading city having more than 5 million population. The main city of the Far East Region is Harbin, Manchuria. Khabarovsk and Vladivostok are the main cities of the former Soviet Union in this eastern region.
In long summer humid continental regions, the American manufacturing belt has largest urban concentration in the world. New York on the east coast is the top most city with a population exceeding more than eight millions in the city area and more than five millions in the metropolitan area. It has the best harbor with all modern facilities. Chicago stands second in U.S. Philadelphia is the third major city of the region with a sea port and many manufacturing Centres; Baltimore, Washington, Cleveland, Kansas City, St. Louis Boston, Pittsburgh urban centres and Beijing are the leading population Centres. Teintrin is the major industrial and commercial centre of the North China Plain. Beijing, the capital of China has its own importance. Mukden is the Chief City of Manchuria.
