Pines

Fishing activities are common in the off shore waters of all humid subtropics but their importance differ from region to region. China and Japan attach importance to fishing. Japan is a leading nation in producing fishes. Red snapper, pompans, grouper, and sheep shed are some of the food species found here. In southern hemisphere too fishing is done in Australian, African and South American parts of the humid subtropics.

In the United States South, forestry plays an important role. Pines are produced in this region and the result is that pulp and paper industry dominates. In southern hemisphere forestry plays comparatively insignificant role in the development of national economy. China is supposed to have great coal deposits in the Red Basin. Iron deposits are available along the Yangtze River. Tin antimony and tungsten are some other minerals found in China. In Japan only coal, copper, gold and sulphur are available and other minerals are normally absent. The United States South is the outstanding mining region of the humid subtropics. It has the largest oil and gas producing areas of the nation. Coal fields, iron deposits also do not lag behind. Sulphur production tops here on the gulf coast of Texas. Brazil to some extent, produces coal. Both African and Australian regions abound in coal deposits.

Japan is now a days not only the most advanced industrial nation of the orient, but it competes the world industry in a big way in many fields. Industries of Japan include iron and steel, textiles, chemicals, tools, rubber goods, petroleum products, ships building etc. China has its industrial concentration mainly in the Yangtze valley. Shanghai is the main silk and cotton textile centre. The United States South has many favorable conditions for the growth of industry. Piedmont has many textile mills producing coarse and medium cotton goods. Pulp and paper industry also flourishes on account of soft wood available here. Ship-building, petroleum refining, food processing, fertilizers, chemicals are some other industries of the region. The Natal coast of Africa produces only consumer goods. In Australia industrial area is spread from Brisbane to Sydney. The iron and steel plants are located at New Castle, Portkenble and Lythgow.

Shanghai is the most outstanding urban centre of China. Nanking is also a very important city. In Japan, Tokyo is the largest city with a population of about 10 million. Yakohama, Osaka and Kyoto are big cities with industrial background. In United States South, Houston, Texas is the largest city of the region with a population more than one million now. New Orleans, Dallas, Birmingham, Miami are some of the principal cities of the region.

In the southern hemisphere only a few cities are large. Buenos Aires has more than 4 million population. Durban is a prominent city of South East Africa. Sydney with more than two million population is the outstanding and prominent city of Australia. Newcastle is one more important urban centre in the region. Auckland (New Zealand) has more that 1 million inhabitants.
